Two Brothers Uncover Dark Secret About Man Buried Outside Cemetery Fence

Keith and Les Bergquist were kids when their dad Kenneth told them a story passed down by his parents when he was a boy: 100 years ago, a grieving father loaded his son’s deceased body into a wagon and dug a grave for him at the Steelesville Cemetery in Minnesota.

However, the man was buried just the outside the fence; the cemetery refused to place his marker inside.

But why?

Keith and Les were fascinated by the sad and mysterious story. One day, as an adult, Keith headed to the local historical society and found an article about the grave in an old town newspaper.

The article explained, in graphic detail, how a young blacksmith named Johan August Lunnberg barged into a neighbor’s home, stole a gun, and killed himself.

The article reflected the general attitude towards mental health issues at that time. For example, the author referred to Johan as a “maniac” when he was in desperate need of professional help. Keith and Les learned it was commonplace for Christian cemeteries to deny burial when a life was taken by suicide.

“They were possessed with demons,” Les sarcastically told KARE. “And because they were possessed with demons, they certainly can’t bury them in a Christian cemetery and contaminate the souls of the other saints that are buried here.”

But the Bergquist family decided the man left outside the fence should no longer be alone. A day before the 100th anniversary of Johan August Lunnberg’s death, they did something incredible.
