The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly "closing in on a deal" to hire former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as their new defensive coordinator, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Tuesday (January 28).
Eberflus had previously worked on the Cowboys' staff from 2011 to 2017. Dallas hired former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach on Friday (January 24).
"The #Cowboys are closing in on a deal for former #Bears HC Matt Eberflus to be their new defensive coordinator, sources say. The favorite all along, Eberflus joins Brian Schottenheimer’s staff and returns to Dallas — where he was LBs coach from 2011-2017," Rapoport wrote on his X account.
Eberflus was fired hours after the Bears lost to the NFC North Division rival Detroit Lions, 23-20, on Thanksgiving Day, which concluded with a controversial decision not to call timeout in the game's final seconds. The 54-year-old was hired by the Bears in 2022 after four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts' defensive coordinator.
Eberflus went 14-32 in three seasons, which includes a 4-8 record in 2024 with five games remaining, finishing last in the NFC North Division during each of his three seasons.
