Do you remember last fall when McDonalds brought back their delicious Szechuan dipping sauce (that was a regular item back in 1998) for just a few hours at minimal locations and people were going nuts trying to get their hands on those little packages of tastiness? Good news people! McDonalds is bringing back 20 million packets of Szechuan sauce starting next week!
As you recall back in October, the reason folks were rushing to McDonalds, even camping out the night before the Szechuan release, was due to the cartoon “Rick and Morty” that airs on adultswim. It’s about a scientist-grandfather who travels through different dimensions and drags his grandson Morty on all the crazy adventures. In a particular episode, Rick mentioned how much he loved McDonalds Szechuan sauce from 1998 and how he’d love it was readily available in the present. Fans of the show went nuts and put the pressure on McDonalds to bring the Szechuan sauce back – which they did, for a brief (hour-long maybe) occasion and that just wasn’t getting it. The people wanted MORE.
McDonald's had no idea this Rick-and-Morty-induced Szechuan sauce craze was going to be such a hit with their customer base. Back in October during the mini-release of the dipping sauce, people were grabbing it and selling it on eBay while others were auctioning it off for charity, grabbing BIG money for each tiny package. One woman even traded a car for a single packet of McDonalds Szechuan dipping sauce.
Lesson learned and McDonalds listened. They’re giving the masses what they want. It’s been confirmed that cartons upon cartons of Szechuan sauce has already been delivered to McDonalds restaurants all across the nation and it will be readily available starting on Monday, February 26th!
Here’s the deal: McDonalds has said that will be available only with a “qualifying purchase.” Now I'm not sure what that qualifying purpose is just yet but you wouldn’t want the sauce without the chicken McNuggets right?
